The Amazon rainforest produces some of the most remarkable natural saps, oils, and resins on Earth. Among the most famous is Sangre de Grado — Dragon's Blood — a deep crimson sap that has been used by indigenous peoples for centuries as a powerful wound healer and all-purpose remedy.
Sangre de Grado (Dragon's Blood)
Croton lechleri, the Dragon's Blood tree, produces a thick, blood-red sap when its bark is cut. This sap has been the subject of significant scientific interest due to its remarkable wound-healing properties. The active compound, taspine, has been shown to accelerate wound closure and promote tissue regeneration.
Traditional uses in the Amazon include application to cuts, wounds, insect bites, rashes, and various skin conditions. The sap dries to form a protective, breathable barrier over wounds — essentially a natural liquid bandage.
Copaiba Oil
Extracted from the trunk of Copaifera trees, Copaiba oil is another cornerstone of Amazonian traditional medicine. This oleoresin has been used for centuries for its soothing properties and is one of the most well-studied Amazonian remedies, with documented anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
Copaiba oil is traditionally used both externally (applied to the skin) and internally (a few drops taken with food or water). It has a warm, woody aroma and is also valued in natural perfumery and aromatherapy.
Batana Oil
Derived from the fruit of the Elaeis oleifera palm, Batana oil (also called Ojonol) is prized for its exceptional hair and skin nourishing properties. Indigenous Miskito women of Central America, known for their remarkably thick and lustrous hair, have used Batana oil for generations. The oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E.
