The Art of Alpaca Textiles: Andean Weaving Traditions

High in the Andes mountains, where temperatures drop well below freezing and the air is thin, alpacas have provided warmth and livelihood to Andean peoples for over 6,000 years. Today, alpaca fiber remains one of the world's most luxurious natural textiles — softer than cashmere, warmer than sheep's wool, and naturally hypoallergenic.

Why Baby Alpaca?

The term "baby alpaca" doesn't necessarily mean the fiber comes from young animals — it refers to a grade of fiber measuring 22.5 microns or finer. This ultra-soft grade comes from the first shearing of young alpacas or from the finest fibers of adult fleece, particularly from the chest and underbelly where the fiber is softest.

Baby alpaca fiber is:

  • Incredibly soft: Comparable to cashmere in hand feel
  • Warm without weight: Hollow fibers trap heat efficiently
  • Hypoallergenic: Contains no lanolin, unlike sheep's wool
  • Durable: Resistant to pilling and maintains its shape over time
  • Naturally water-resistant: Repels light moisture

Andean Weaving Traditions

Textile production is deeply woven into Andean culture — literally. Weaving traditions in Peru date back thousands of years, with some of the world's oldest known textiles discovered in Peruvian archaeological sites. Traditional patterns carry cultural meaning, with specific designs representing communities, family lineages, and cosmological beliefs.

Many of the patterns you see in our alpaca textiles draw from this deep tradition, featuring geometric motifs, earth tones, and the distinctive multi-colored stripe work that characterizes Andean design.

Our Collection

Our alpaca textiles are sourced from skilled artisans in Peru who continue these centuries-old weaving traditions. Each piece — whether a plush throw, a warm poncho, or a decorative pillow — is made with genuine baby alpaca fiber and finished with the attention to detail that distinguishes handcrafted work from mass production.

Throws and Blankets

Perfect for adding warmth and texture to any space. Our alpaca throws feature traditional Andean geometric patterns in natural and dyed color palettes.

Ponchos

A garment with deep roots in Andean culture, the poncho remains both practical and stylish. Our baby alpaca ponchos offer genuine warmth in a timeless silhouette.

Caring for Alpaca Textiles

Alpaca fiber is naturally durable and low-maintenance. Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, gently press out excess water (don't wring), and lay flat to dry. Store folded — not hung — to maintain shape. With proper care, alpaca textiles will last for decades.
